While Vienna has been spending the last 100 years hitting back at accusations that it’s “dull” (including a viral 2025 campaign promising any tourist who still felt that way after a visit their money back), the reality is that the Central European capital is anything but.
2025 was a record tourist year in which over 20 million travelers from both within and outside of Europe stayed for at least one night to experience everything from the city’s imperial palaces and rich musical history to the countless iconic desserts that have become synonymous with its culture.
As part of its network expansion for the coming summer, American Airlines has just announced that it will launch the only direct flight from the U.S. to Vienna International (VIE) run by a local carrier. (The flagship airline, Austrian Airlines, flies to five U.S. cities including JFK, Newark and Chicago).
American Airlines announces new Vienna, Porto and Reykjavik routes for summer 2027
The new flight between Philadelphia International (PHL) and Vienna will launch on May 6, 2027 and run seasonally until January 2028 on an 150-passenger Airbus A321XLR.
The extended season, American said, has been planned for those looking to visit the capital during the period of Christmas markets. Vienna is also an obvious expansion given that American ran seasonal flights to smaller Prague (PRG) and Budapest (BUD) during the peak European summer travel season last year.

The newly-announced routes also include flights to Iceland’s Reykjavik (KEK) and Porto (OPO) in northern Portugal from Philadelphia. The airline will be flying to both cities for the first time next year while also expanding service to cities like Tokyo (NRT) with a route from Chicago’s O’Hare International (ORD) and launching a new seasonal flight to Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) from JFK on March 28.
“Vienna is an iconic city with spectacular palaces, museums, classical music experiences and outdoor activities, making it a must-visit destination,” American writes of its new destination. In a nod to the city’s culture, those traveling in the top Flagship Suite business class will be served coffee with a slice of the chocolate Sachertorte that originated in Vienna’s iconic Sacher Hotel in 1832.

Other new flights include a route between Charlotte and Barcelona as well as a fourth daily flight between JFK and London Heathrow (LHR) added during the peak summer period.
The Boeing 787-9 running the latter will be equipped with the airline’s Flagship Suite top fare class to attract American’s highest-spending passengers. Several of the routes have also been envisioned as “connectors” from which travelers from smaller American cities can go on to other destinations in Europe.

“Coming off a summer of celebration, American is growing to offer new destinations and routes, bolstering our premium global route offerings,” American’s Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning Brian Znotins said in a statement on the new routes. “Our international network has expanded to offer destinations to satisfy every travel palate.”
